South Africa have brought back a familiar name as they prepare for their upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia.

Fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has returned to the Proteas' 50-over squad for the first time since the 2023 ODI World Cup. He is part of a 16-player squad that will be led by regular captain Temba Bavuma.

Coetzee's return is the biggest talking point from the squad announcement, with the quick set to get another opportunity to establish himself in South Africa's ODI setup.

Coetzee returns after nearly three years

Coetzee last featured for South Africa in the ODI format during the 2023 World Cup. His return adds another attacking option to a pace attack that already has plenty of firepower.

The fast bowler will be joined by Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch, Kwena Maphaka and Ottneil Baartman, giving South Africa six pace options for the series.

The selection of Maphaka also adds some exciting young pace to the group, while Jansen and Ngidi bring valuable international experience.

Rabada misses out

One notable absence from the squad is Kagiso Rabada.

The experienced fast bowler will miss the Australia series as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury. His absence leaves South Africa without one of their most established bowling options, making Coetzee's return even more significant.

South Africa have also opted for two left-arm spin options in Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin.

That gives the selectors plenty of variety when it comes to building their bowling attack, particularly depending on the conditions in Australia.

Strong batting group

The Proteas have plenty of experience in their batting lineup as well.

Captain Temba Bavuma will be joined by Aiden Markram, David Miller and Quinton de Kock, while Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs and Tony de Zorzi provide further batting options.

Matthew Breetzke is also part of the squad, adding another young option to the group.

With a mix of experienced campaigners and younger players, South Africa will be hoping the squad can put together a strong showing against Australia.

The three-match ODI series against Australia will give South Africa another opportunity to test their squad ahead of their upcoming international commitments.

For Coetzee, though, the series will carry an added significance. After being away from the ODI setup since the 2023 World Cup, he now has a chance to remind everyone exactly what he can bring to the Proteas' attack.
