Rohit Sharma’s future in ODI cricket has become one of the biggest talking points around Indian cricket once again.
According to reports, the BCCI is set to hold an important review meeting in Mumbai where several issues surrounding the Indian team will be discussed. Among them is expected to be the future of Rohit Sharma, particularly with India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup already beginning.
The meeting is expected to involve BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and VVS Laxman, along with other senior officials and team members.
What happens with Rohit?
The question surrounding Rohit has been building for some time.
The veteran opener had a difficult start to India’s ODI series in England, managing scores of 11 and 26 in the first two games. That immediately brought questions about whether he would remain part of India's plans for the 2027 World Cup.
There were also reports that the selectors were considering moving in a different direction for the next World Cup cycle. The speculation became even louder after suggestions that the Lord’s ODI could be Rohit’s final appearance for India.
But then Rohit did what Rohit has done throughout his career — he answered the noise with the bat.
He smashed a superb 138 at Lord’s, reminding everyone that there is still plenty of cricket left in him. The century may have quietened the retirement talk for the moment, but it has not completely settled the bigger question about his long-term future.
Experience vs the future
This is where the BCCI faces a difficult call.
Rohit is 39 and India have to think beyond the present. The 2027 World Cup is still ahead, and selectors need to decide whether they want to build around experienced players or start preparing a younger core well before the tournament.
At the same time, removing someone with Rohit’s experience is not a decision that can be taken lightly.
He has played in multiple World Cups, captained India in major tournaments and knows what it takes to handle pressure at the highest level. His recent 138 also showed that he can still produce match-winning performances when his timing clicks.
The challenge, therefore, isn't simply about whether Rohit can score runs.
It is about whether he fits into the team India wants to take to the 2027 World Cup.
More than just Rohit on the agenda
The meeting is expected to cover much more than Rohit’s future.
India's recent performances, player injuries, fitness management and the team’s planning for upcoming tours are all likely to be discussed. The coordination between the coaching staff, selectors and the Centre of Excellence could also come under the microscope.
India’s next major ODI assignments will be important in providing clarity.
For Rohit, though, the situation is fairly simple: there is no confirmed announcement that he is finished with ODI cricket.
For now, his future remains a selection call.
And after that 138 at Lord’s, it would be premature to assume that Rohit Sharma has already played his final chapter in India’s ODI colours.
